University Grants Commission is a statutory body set up by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India in accordance to the UGC Act 1956 and is charged with coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of higher education in India.
Founded: 1956
Objectives: Coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of university education. It provides recognition to universities in India, and disburses funds to such recognized universities and college.

Salient Features of RTM Nagpur University

 
  1. Founded on 4th August 1923.
  2. The then V.C. Dr. T.G. Kedar offered admissions to the 500 students who were discarded from Usmania University for having participated in ‘Vandemataram Movement’ during the British regime.
  3. This university conferred upon Mahatma Gandhi and Swatantryavir Sawarkar honorary degrees of ‘Doctor of Law’ & ‘Doctor of Letters’, respectively in 1938 & 1943.
  4. The students involved in ‘Chale Jao Movement (1942) couldn’t take university exams; this university offered them special exams & organized special Convocation Program
  5. This university invited Sarojini Naidu, Shri. C. Rajgopalachari and Sardar Vallabhabhai Patel in 1931, 1944 & 1946, respectively.
  6. This university offered financial assistance to backward class students in pursuit of their higher education studies in 1949.
