Profile of Department

Introduction:

The Department of English is one of the most active departments in the college. It was established with inception of the college in 2001. The department offers Compulsory English & English Literature Subject to the Arts faculty students of B. A. Part – I, II &III, (Semester – I, II, III, IV, V & VI). It follows curriculum as prescribed by R.T.M. Nagpur University Nagpur.There are two teachers. Compulsory English is introduced with Language Skills among students. Students offer English Literature as special subject. The syllabus of this subject is based on ‘A Background to the Study of English Literature’, Practical Criticism, Novels, Dramas, Short Stories, Literary Term, Essay and Poetry.

The teachers are an awareness of all such aspects related to seminars, viva and assignments. One striking example of our awareness may be cited here. Considering that students make a spelling and other errors while writing& learning, this department are prepared PPTs. Students are helped of these PPTs and to benefit for overall result. The department is quite significant considering that our college is based in rural area; our students come from that area to the college. They are totally inadequate about the syllabus. Students hold English in awe. So our first duty is to remove this fear, this feeling of inferiority from the mind of our students about English.

Apart from examination success, this department has encouraged student to develop communication skill, which is quite essential in modern era. We encourage students to speak English Language. Students come together and speak on various topics in syllabus. It is useful for Spoken English. The department is proud that our students organize inauguration functions of ‘English Literary Association’ as well as others of programs their self and conduct its quite successfully. The students of the department come through examination with flying colours quite some students get first class and above 75% at the graduation level. We are proud that during some years, our some students have got government job by competitive exam; a few of them are college lecturer and private department. Whenever possible the department has conducted practice examination modeller on the annual examination, so that the students perform better in the final examination. Department has organized Multidisciplinary National Level E-conference so that students have learned more about higher education and they get benefits of speakers’ knowledge in the life.

  • To study Language Skills which enable them to expand, from a variety of perspectives, their own readings of literature and understanding of
  • To teach an appropriate knowledge of relevant fields within the discipline, including literature; literary history, criticism & theory the language structures of modern English & the history of the English language.
  • To enhance appreciation and enjoyment of literature & language.
  • To guide to all form of literature as poetry, fiction & drama etc.
  • To convey to students a broad historical knowledge of English.
  • To provide training in a variety of cognitive skills including analysing, synthesizing, speaking, listening, reading, evaluating and appreciating language.
  • To teach job-Orientale English Language& English Literature.
  • To developed Communication, Conventional skills.
  • To teach English Language competitive exam point of view.

Importance of English Literature:

  • English Literature makes students learn about ourselves and our history.
  • English Literature teaches many lessons based universal themes, such as love, war, desire, justice etc.
  • English Literature makes us to think and to form opinions and convictions of our own.
  • English Literature is the recorded history of ideas and society through the lens of its writer.
  • English Literature opens our eyes and makes us see more than just what the door shows.
  • Without literature, we would not know about our past, our families and the people who came before and walked on the ground as us.
  • English Literature helps us address humanity i.e. human nature and conditions which affect all people.
  • English Literature provides growth, strengths, and our minds and gives us the ability to think outside the box.
  • English Literature helps students to build skills of analytical and interpretative argument become careful and critical readers, practice writing in a variety of genres as a process of intellectual inquiry and creative expression.
  • Nobel Prize is given to English Literature Laureates.
